Frequently Asked
Questions
-
Do foreign nationals need a work visa to work in Singapore?
Yes, all foreign nationals must have an appropriate work visa or permit to legally work and earn income in Singapore.
-
What documents are required to apply for an Employment Pass (EP)?
To apply for an EP for yourself or a potential employee, you’ll need to submit the following in PDF format along with the EP application form:
- A copy of the applicant’s passport.
- The company’s latest business profile is registered with the Accounting and Corporate Regulatory Authority (ACRA).
- Certified translations of educational certificates (e.g., diploma, degree).
-
Can I start a sole proprietorship and apply for an EP to run my business?
No. The Ministry of Manpower (MOM) only grants EPs for business operations under a Private Limited Company structure, not for sole proprietorships.
-
Is there a quota on the number of EP holders my company can employ?
No, there is no fixed quota for EP holders. However, companies with a higher proportion of foreign Professionals, Managers, Executives, and Technicians (PMETs) or a high concentration of employees from a single nationality may be placed under the Fair Consideration Framework (FCF) Watchlist. These companies face stricter scrutiny, and EP application processing times may be longer.
-
What happens to an EP if the holder changes jobs?
If an EP holder changes jobs and a new EP is approved, MOM does not automatically cancel the existing EP. This ensures the current employer can honour the notice period.
-
Can an EP holder apply for Singapore Permanent Residency (PR)?
Yes, EP holders can apply for PR through the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA). Applications are assessed based on economic contributions, family ties to Singaporeans, qualifications, age, length of residency, and the applicant’s ability to integrate into society and commit to Singapore.
